Prep begins….

Friday, August 27th, 2010

As I mentioned in my last post, I’m currently gearing up to start shooting my next short “Broken”, a 10 minute drama, which will be going before cameras in October. It’s actually a short Chris wrote back in 2006, which for various reasons we ended up not shooting at the time, but now it’s undergone somewhat of a revamp, been through a quick spit-and-polish and is ready to go!

Something interesting that’s happened with it is that we recently decided to pull a “Salt” and change our lead character from male to female which we think makes the film infinitely more interesting and gives it a whole new dynamic. Chris and I have since been working on the script, looking at exactly how this is going to affect our story and characters. It should be a nice meaty role for the actress and I look forward to the auditions which are set for September.

Finally I’m going to be producing the film with a great friend of mine and talented film-maker Paul Dudbridge, who actually tutored me back when I was in the ITV Production Skills workshop. Check out some of his projects at his site – www.hanoverpictures.co.uk.

The plan is to shoot Broken back-to-back with one of his own shorts, entitled “Chloe”, and keep a single crew for both. I can’t wait to get started!

More on this soon… In the meantime, Paul and I are off to North Wales for the next four days to shoot a commercial for some holiday homes, to include some of the local activities including water parks and paintballing, should be fun!

Simon is currently in pre-production on a low-budget action thriller for summer 2011, tentatively titled “Thieves.”

Written by long-term writing partner Chris Marshfield, the film is pitched as “Payback” meets “The Escapist” and is a revenge/heist movie that will be shot in and around Bristol.

In other news, Simon is prepping to start shooting his next short film “Broken” in November, which he’ll be producing alongside his ITV Workshop tutor Paul Dudbridge of Hanover Pictures (www.hanoverpictures.co.uk). More details can be found on that film in the “Projects” page, and auditions are set to take place in September.

The latest….

Hi there,

I realise it’s been a while since my last update, but I’ve actually been away on holiday at the San Diego Comic Con (yes, I’m a fanboy at heart and proud) where I had a fantastic time. I’m sure those of you who are of as much of an enthusiast as me will have already gotten yourselves up to date via the myriad of blogs and websites which were able to provide live feeds from the Convention hall – so I’m sure anything really news-worthy has long been broken somewhere else, but my personal highlights included:

– The Expendables panel (can’t wait to see the movie Friday) – Stallone was a true entertainer, funny, engaging and extremely candid whilst reflecting on his career and experiences. Thanks Harry Knowles from AICN for moderating a great panel.

– The Marvel panels – purely for the live on-stage line-up of the entire Avengers cast, truly awesome.

– Meeting Wesley Snipes! One of my childhood heroes.

– Any of the two panels attended by Will Ferrell (Megamind, The Other Guys) – even more hilarious in person.

– Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams panel. Fascinating to hear these two master story-tellers talk about film and their work to date.

– The Paul panel – because Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are legends.

So what now I’m back? First things first, being a freelancer I have to remind everyone who may or may not need an editor that I’m back in town so they can start hiring me again. In fact, I just completed cutting the music video for UK R ‘n’ B artist Aaron Soul’s latest track “Leave me Alone.” It’s a great looking video (something that’s down to the DP and the track, not me) and I’m very excited about this and hope I can show it online soon.

As for my projects, we are currently prepping for ‘Broken’, my next short which is shooting in October for which we will be casting and starting rehearsals soon – and I am also about to shoot a teaser trailer for “Thieves”, my next feature. Sadly though it will be for investors only rather than an official trailer for public consumption, so I won’t be showing it here. Other than that Chris and I have been working on a few other ideas to shop around so I’m nicely back in the swing of things!

Until my next update, I don’t know if any of you are avid roulette players, but for those who are… here’s a little tip:

Always bet on black!
